Inter Miami’s Suarez Sorry for Spitting at Seattle Staff Member
Inter Miami striker Luis Suarez has publicly apologised after being caught spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member in the aftermath of Sunday’s Leagues Cup final, Sport360NG reports.
The 38-year-old forward admitted his behaviour was unacceptable, writing on Instagram:
“It was a moment of high tension and frustration, where things happened straight after the game that should not have happened. But that does not excuse my reaction. I was wrong, and I truly regret it.”
Seattle stunned the Messi-led Miami side with a 3-0 win at Lumen Field to claim the trophy. Emotions boiled over immediately after the final whistle, when Suarez grabbed Sounders midfielder Obed Vargas, 20, in a headlock, triggering a scuffle involving players and staff from both teams.
As order was being restored, television cameras appeared to show Suarez spitting towards a Seattle staff member while walking away.
“I feel bad about what happened, and I didn’t want to miss the chance to acknowledge it and apologise to everyone affected by what I did,” Suarez added in his statement.
It remains to be seen what disciplinary action will follow, but the Uruguayan striker stressed he is determined to help Inter Miami’s push for the MLS Cup playoffs.
“We know there’s still a long way to go this season, and we’ll keep working together to deliver the success this club and its supporters deserve,” he wrote.
Suarez, one of football’s most controversial figures, has a long history of disciplinary issues. He was banned for four months during the 2014 World Cup for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, while earlier in his career he received lengthy suspensions for biting opponents at club level. In 2011, he was handed an eight-match ban in England for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
At the 2010 World Cup, Suarez’s infamous handball denied Ghana a last-minute winner in the quarter-final, cementing his reputation as one of football’s most divisive characters.
