Sabalenka Through by Walkover as Pegula Sets Up US Open Semi-Final Rematch
Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka booked her place in the US Open semi-finals without hitting a ball after opponent Marketa Vondrousova withdrew through injury, setting up a repeat of last year’s final against Jessica Pegula, Sport360NG reports.
The world No.1 had been due to face the unseeded Czech in Tuesday’s night session at Flushing Meadows, but Vondrousova pulled out less than two hours before the scheduled start with a knee problem.
Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion whose career has been blighted by injuries, attempted a pre-match practice but was forced to stop early and later appeared with heavy strapping on her left leg.
“I tried everything to be ready, but after speaking with the tournament doctor I decided not to risk making the injury worse,” she said in a statement. “I’m grateful for the support and sorry to the fans who were looking forward to the match.”
Sabalenka expressed sympathy for her rival on social media, writing: “So sorry for Marketa after all she’s been through. She’s been playing amazing tennis and I know how badly this must hurt for her.”
Meanwhile, Pegula ensured an all-too-familiar showdown with the Belarusian by dismissing Barbora Krejcikova 6-3 6-3 in a commanding display.
The American fourth seed, a finalist here in 2024, has yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament. Against Krejcikova, she dominated the rallies with aggressive baseline hitting and sharp net play, capitalising on her opponent’s serving troubles to secure an early advantage.
Krejcikova, a two-time Grand Slam champion, had staged a dramatic escape in the previous round, saving eight match points against Taylor Townsend. But she could not repeat the feat as a shaky serve, including seven double faults, handed Pegula crucial breaks in both sets.
“I feel so comfortable out here,” Pegula said after sealing victory at the first match point. “It’s crazy to feel this relaxed on the biggest stage with the best players. Ten years ago I never thought I’d be good at this, but I guess I am.”
Pegula will now meet Sabalenka in a blockbuster semi-final, a rematch of last year’s title clash.
