Scheffler Beat Griffin to Win Procore Championship in Ryder Cup Tune-Up
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler sharpened his form ahead of the Ryder Cup with victory at the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship in Napa, California, Sport360NG reports.
The 29-year-old American closed with a five-under-par 67 at Silverado to finish on 19-under 269, one stroke clear of compatriot Ben Griffin, who had led going into the final round.
Griffin narrowly missed a six-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff, leaving Scheffler to claim his sixth title of the season. Lanto Griffin finished a further shot back in third.
Scheffler, a four-time major winner, will spearhead the United States’ challenge against Europe when the Ryder Cup tees off at Bethpage Black in New York on September 26.
“I think we’re all excited for the Ryder Cup to get here,” Scheffler said after sealing the win. “For me, preparation is always the key. When I get to the first tee, I want to know I’ve done everything possible to play well. I feel that way now, and I’m ready for it to start.”
On Sunday, Scheffler produced six birdies against a single bogey, including a 26-foot putt at the seventh and three gains on the back nine, to fend off Griffin’s challenge in a field that featured 10 members of captain Keegan Bradley’s U.S. team.
Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and 20-year-old amateur Jackson Koivun shared fourth place at 16-under, with Koivun again impressing just a week after helping the U.S. retain the Walker Cup. U.S. Open champion JJ Spaun closed with a 66 to take sixth.
