Graham Potter appointed new Sweden head coach

Former West Ham United boss Graham Potter has been named the new head coach of the Sweden national team, taking charge on a short-term contract as the country looks to revive its 2026 World Cup qualifying hopes, Sport360NG reports.

The 50-year-old Englishman replaces Jon Dahl Tomasson, who was dismissed after Sweden’s 1-0 defeat to Kosovo on October 13, a result that ended their chances of securing automatic qualification from Group B.

Despite that setback, Sweden remain in contention for a play-off berth, thanks to their strong showing in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League, where they topped their group.

“I’m deeply honoured by this opportunity and equally motivated,” Potter said after his appointment. “Sweden has an excellent group of players performing at the highest levels across Europe. My goal is to create the right environment for the team to reach its full potential and qualify for the World Cup next summer.”

Potter’s return to Swedish football marks a homecoming of sorts. He first made his name at Östersund, guiding the club from the fourth tier to the Allsvenskan with three promotions in four seasons and winning the Swedish Cup in 2017.

His coaching career later took him to Swansea City, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Chelsea, before his brief stint at West Ham, which ended in September following a poor run of form. The Hammers had suffered five defeats in six matches at the start of the 2025–26 campaign and sat in the Premier League’s bottom three.

Despite that difficult spell in London, Potter remains highly regarded for his tactical acumen and his previous success in Sweden, a reputation the Swedish FA hopes he can draw upon to steer the national team back on course.
