Guardiola’s men move within two points of top spot Arsenal after Sunderland win
Manchester City tightened the Premier League title race by taking full advantage of leaders Arsenal’s unexpected defeat, dismantling Sunderland 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium, Sport360NG reports.
Pep Guardiola’s side responded to Arsenal’s last-gasp loss to Aston Villa earlier on Saturday with a commanding performance, moving to within two points of the top.
City initially struggled to break down Sunderland’s disciplined five-man defensive block, but the game turned in the space of four first-half minutes. Ruben Dias opened the scoring with a thunderous 30-yard strike that deflected off Dan Ballard into the top corner, punishing the visitors for allowing the Portugal international too much space.
Josko Gvardiol doubled the lead on 35 minutes, rising highest to head in Phil Foden’s precise inswinging corner and giving the home side a comfortable cushion at halftime.
In the second half, City continued to dominate. Jeremy Doku’s curling effort rattled the post, Foden’s follow-up was expertly blocked, and Erling Haaland’s hooked shot was cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida. Rayan Cherki then delivered a sublime assist for Foden to head home City’s third, sealing a comprehensive victory.
Sunderland’s attacking opportunities were limited, with Enzo le Fee firing wide in the first half. They created more chances after the break, but Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Wilson Isidor, and a Granit Xhaka strike hit the post. Luke O’Nien was sent off in stoppage time for a studs-up challenge on Matheus Nunes, a decision upgraded from yellow to red after a pitchside review.
Cherki was City’s standout performer, providing two assists and showcasing his growing influence in the team’s attack. His audacious ‘rabona’ assist for Foden highlighted the Frenchman’s creativity and vision, complementing the goal-scoring prowess of Foden and Haaland.
Sunderland, despite the heavy defeat, remain seventh in the table, continuing a remarkable season under Regis le Bris. Early goals proved decisive, and missed chances by Isidor and Xhaka underscored the fine margins that denied them a potential upset at the Etihad, a stadium where they have yet to claim a Premier League win in 14 attempts.
City’s victory not only strengthened their title challenge but also extended their dominance over promoted sides, marking 25 wins in their past 27 encounters. With momentum firmly on their side, Guardiola’s men now head into the crucial run-in within striking distance of the Premier League summit.
