Ethiopia has officially declared its intention to bid for the hosting rights of the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), intensifying competition for one of African football’s most prestigious tournaments, Sport360NG reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently reopened the bidding process after adjusting the tournament’s schedule, a move that has reignited interest from several national federations across the continent.

Ethiopia’s bid positions the East African nation as a contender to return Africa’s flagship football event to the Horn of Africa, adding a new dimension to the growing list of interested hosts.

Southern Africa is also firmly in the running, with South Africa submitting a joint bid in partnership with Botswana and Lesotho under a proposed co-hosting arrangement.

CAF is expected to assess all submitted bids before releasing a shortlist, with the final host nation or nations to be confirmed following a comprehensive inspection and evaluation process.
