BREAKING: VAR to be used for first time at Windsor Park in Northern Ireland

The Northern Ireland Football League (NIFL) has confirmed that Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will be deployed for the first time in domestic football when Linfield F.C. face Glentoran F.C. in next month’s BetMcLean Cup final, Sport360NG reports.

The showpiece encounter between the Belfast rivals is scheduled for Sunday, 15 March (15:00 GMT) at Windsor Park.

In a statement released on Friday, NIFL described the move as a landmark moment for the domestic game, aligning Northern Ireland’s top competitions more closely with European standards.

While emphasising that VAR will not replace the authority of the on-field referee, the league said the technology would serve as a support tool designed to improve accuracy, fairness and transparency in key decisions.

Match officials from the Irish Football Association will oversee proceedings on the pitch, while the VAR operation itself will be handled by experienced referees from outside Northern Ireland. The system in use will be Hawk-Eye, the same technology employed in FIFA and UEFA competitions, ensuring technical expertise during its introduction.

According to NIFL, the final provides a controlled environment to test operational procedures, communication channels and the broader integration of VAR into domestic matchday structures. Insights gained from the fixture are expected to guide any future decisions regarding a wider rollout across league competitions.

Lawlor: ‘Important step forward’

NIFL chief executive Gerard Lawlor acknowledged that the decision may divide opinion but maintained it represents progress for the league.

“The introduction of VAR for this game represents an important step forward for our league, strengthening decision-making and supporting our match officials,” he said.

“We recognise this will not be universally popular and that any new technology brings scrutiny and adjustment. However, this final offers a valuable opportunity to assess the system in a controlled setting, while delivering practical benefits for referees and clubs, particularly those competing in Europe where VAR is required.”

Irish FA Head of Refereeing Andrew Davey described the development as an exciting advancement for officiating standards in Northern Ireland, underlining efforts to equip referees with the best available tools for high-profile fixtures.

A Trial Run — and a Glimpse of the Future?

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among supporters, with VAR continuing to polarise opinion across European leagues.

Lawlor and Irish FA chief executive Patrick Nelson have previously expressed ambitions to introduce VAR domestically but cited financial constraints as a major hurdle. Securing full Hawk-Eye operations for a one-off final, notably the first BetMcLean Cup final meeting between Linfield and Glentoran in 16 years, represents a significant logistical step.

Windsor Park is already equipped to host VAR, having staged numerous men’s and women’s internationals where the system was in operation. Both Linfield and Larne have also encountered VAR at the south Belfast venue during European qualifiers.

However, questions remain over long-term implementation. With officials from outside Northern Ireland operating the system for the final, it is unclear how quickly locally based referees could gain the necessary training and accreditation should VAR be expanded to regular Irish Premiership fixtures.

For now, the BetMcLean Cup final will serve as a high-profile trial. Whether it marks the beginning of a new technological era for the Irish Premiership will likely depend on its success — and the financial feasibility of rolling it out more broadly.
