Norrie Stunned by World No. 99 Vukic in Canadian Open Exit
Cameron Norrie’s campaign at the Canadian Open came to an early end on Wednesday following a shock second-round loss to Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic, ranked 99th in the world.
The British number two, who recently climbed to 39 in the ATP rankings after a quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon, was beaten 6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 in a rain-hit contest that lasted over two hours.
Norrie, 29, is still searching for his first singles title since 2023. Despite an encouraging grass-court season, his transition to hard courts has been far from smooth, with a sluggish start seeing him fall 3-0 behind in the opening set.
Midway through the second set, Norrie appeared to be unwell and had his blood pressure checked by medical staff. Nevertheless, he fought back valiantly to force a third set, winning the tie-break convincingly.
But missed opportunities proved costly. The Brit failed to convert any of his three break-point chances in the final set, allowing Vukic to regain control and seal one of the biggest wins of his career.
Later on Wednesday, British number one Emma Raducanu is due to begin her own Canadian Open campaign.
