Teen Sensation Mboko Beats Gauff to Reach Canadian Open Quarter-finals
Teenage tennis prodigy Victoria Mboko pulled off the biggest upset of the Canadian Open so far, dispatching top seed Coco Gauff in straight sets to book her spot in the quarter-finals in Montreal, Sport360NG reports.
The 18-year-old Canadian, who entered the tournament on a wildcard, needed just over an hour to defeat the reigning US Open champion 6-1, 6-4, in what is arguably the most significant win of her young career.
Mboko, ranked 85th at the start of the week, broke Gauff four times from five opportunities and has now lost just one set in four matches at the WTA 1000 event.
“I came into the match fully focused,” Mboko said afterwards. “I tried to stay composed, especially with such a big crowd watching. It’s an incredibly special moment for me.”
Having started the year ranked outside the top 300, Mboko surged through the ITF circuit, compiling a 22-match unbeaten run and winning five titles without dropping a set. Her latest victory is expected to propel her to No. 53 in the world rankings.
She will now face Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, currently ranked 83rd, in a wide-open quarter-final clash.
Gauff, meanwhile, continued to struggle with her serve, recording six double faults to bring her total to 43 across three matches in Montreal.
“She’s definitely got a bright future,” Gauff said of her opponent. “I’m sure this won’t be the last time we face each other.”
Elsewhere in the women’s draw, second seed Iga Swiatek moved smoothly into the last 16, defeating Germany’s Eva Lys 6-2, 6-2.
In Toronto, men’s second-round action saw Norway’s Casper Ruud fall 6-4, 7-5 to Russia’s Karen Khachanov, while top seed Alexander Zverev advanced to the quarter-finals via walkover after Francisco Cerundolo withdrew.
Australian Alexei Popyrin also pulled off a surprise, recovering from a set down to eliminate fifth seed Holger Rune 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
