Oluremi Tinubu: First Lady Hails D’Tigress for Reaching AfroBasket Final
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has praised the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their qualification for the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, Sport360NG reports.
In a message posted to her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, the First Lady lauded the team’s impressive consistency and performance over the years, describing them as role models for women and girls across the country.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the D’Tigress National Basketball team for securing a spot in this year’s AfroBasket final,” she wrote. “Your remarkable 10-year unbeaten streak is a testament to your dedication, discipline, and passion for the sport.”
She continued, “You are a true source of inspiration and pride for Nigerian women. Thank you for flying the nation’s flag high. As you prepare for the final, I pray your efforts will be rewarded with victory. We eagerly await your return, trophy in hand!”
D’Tigress advanced to the final after a gritty 75–68 win over longtime rivals Senegal on Saturday at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The semifinal showdown lived up to its billing as a battle of heavyweights. Nigeria edged the opening quarter 22–17 and held a slim advantage in the second, 21–20. Despite mounting pressure from a determined Senegalese side, the defending champions maintained their composure to seal the win and continue their dominant run on the continent.
