Tauson Beats Swiatek as Seeds Continue to Fall at Canadian Open

Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek became the latest high-profile casualty at the Canadian Open, falling to Denmark’s Clara Tauson in a shock fourth-round defeat, Sport360NG reports.

Tauson, ranked 19th in the world, avenged her recent Wimbledon loss to Swiatek with a commanding 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win in Montreal on Sunday. The 21-year-old Dane’s victory came on the heels of exits for other top seeds, including world number one Coco Gauff, defending champion Jessica Pegula, and fourth seed Mirra Andreeva.

“It’s a great feeling. It shows that the work I’ve been putting in is paying off,” said Tauson, who captured her third WTA title earlier this year, her first since 2021. “I’m gaining confidence at this level and starting to feel like I belong here. That belief made a big difference in the key moments today.”

Tauson now moves on to face Australian Open champion Madison Keys in the quarter-finals. Keys overcame a tough challenge from Karolina Muchova, saving two match points before securing a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over the Czech player.

In another dominant display, Japan’s Naomi Osaka cruised into the last eight with a 6-1, 6-0 demolition of Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova. The four-time Grand Slam winner, who returned to the tour earlier this year after giving birth, needed just 49 minutes to complete the rout.

Osaka, now ranked 49th, is hunting her first title since her comeback. She recently parted ways with coach Patrick Mouratoglou and has joined forces with Tomasz Wiktorowski, former coach of Swiatek.

“I came in with a clear strategy and things just clicked,” Osaka said after the match.

On the men’s side in Toronto, ninth seed Alex de Minaur continued his impressive summer form with a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over American Frances Tiafoe. The Australian, who lifted the Washington Open trophy last week, is aiming to go one better than his runner-up finish at this event last year.

Elsewhere, Denmark’s Holger Rune became the latest seeded player to exit after falling to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
