Liverpool paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota during their first return to Anfield since the tragic passing of the Portuguese forward, Sport360NG reports.

Jota, 28, died in a car accident in Spain last month alongside his younger brother, André Silva, aged 25. The tragedy sent shockwaves through the football community and left a deep void within the Liverpool squad and fan base.

On Monday, during a pre-season double-header against Athletic Bilbao, the club staged an emotional homage to their former No. 20. Prior to kick-off in the opening match, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson and Athletic Bilbao president Jon Uriarte laid wreaths at the edge of the six-yard box.

Surrounding digital boards displayed the message: “Rest in Peace Diogo Jota and Andre Silva – You’ll Never Walk Alone“, while fans chanted Jota’s name and waved banners bearing his image and number. That iconic No. 20 jersey has since been retired by the club as a mark of respect.

In both games, play was paused in the 20th minute as supporters, players, and staff stood to applaud, creating a poignant moment of reflection in honour of Jota’s contributions and memory.

Since joining Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers

in 2020, Jota made 182 appearances, netting

65 goals and playing a crucial role in Liverpool’s Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup triumphs.

Head coach Arne Slot, writing in the matchday programme, acknowledged the immense grief felt by the club and its supporters.

“This is a difficult time for everyone associated with Liverpool FC, especially Diogo’s family, his wife, children, and close friends,” Slot wrote. “We will always carry him with us, in our hearts and minds, wherever we go.”

He also praised the outpouring of support from the glob

al football community, especially from Liverpool fans, whose expressions of solidarity have brought comfort to those mourning Jota’s loss.

Liverpool now shift focus to the Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace at Wembley on Sunday, August 10, before hosting Bournemouth in their Premier League opener on Friday, August 15.
