Nigeria’s D’Tigress continued their dominance in African women’s basketball on Sunday, securing a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket crown with a commanding 78–64 win over Mali in the final held in Abidjan, Sport360NG reports.

While the victory marked Nigeria’s seventh overall AfroBasket title, individual brilliance also took centre stage during the closing ceremony, which honoured top performers from across the continent.

Leading the accolades was Amy Okonkwo, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) for a second successive edition. The dynamic forward capped off an outstanding tournament with a decisive performance in the final, tallying 19 points, nine rebounds, and three assists to propel Nigeria to glory.

Surprisingly, no official award was handed out for Best Coach, despite widespread acclaim for Nigeria’s Rena Wakama. Her strategic acumen has now led D’Tigress to back-to-back championships, making her the first coach in AfroBasket history to win titles in her first two appearances at the tournament.

The awards ceremony also underscored the increasing competitiveness of women’s basketball across Africa, with a diverse mix of nations represented among the honourees.

As the 2025 edition of the Women’s AfroBasket concludes, attention now turns to how Africa’s top teams and players will build on this momentum in upcoming Olympic and international qualifiers.
