Nigeria Advances Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games with London Talks
Nigeria has intensified its campaign to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, holding high-level discussions in London with officials from the National Sports Commission (NSC), the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), Sport360NG reports.
A statement released, confirmed that the delegation, led by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, met with CGF executives to review Nigeria’s expression of interest submitted earlier this year and to map out the next steps in the bidding process.
The Nigerian team also featured NSC Director-General Bukola Olapade, NOC President and IOC executive member Habu Gumel, NOC Vice-President Solomon Ogba, Secretary-General Tunde Popola, along with technical experts and advisors.
Discussions focused on Nigeria’s vision for hosting the Games and the specific requirements for a final bid. According to the NSC, key topics included candidate city conduct codes, communication protocols, timelines, and the CGF’s expectations for host nations.
The CGF has recently introduced reforms designed to make the Commonwealth Games more sustainable and cost-effective for host countries. Nigerian officials said the London meeting provided a platform to ensure their bid aligns with these new standards.
Domestically, the delegation highlighted reforms being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, emphasizing Nigeria’s strategic aim of leveraging major sporting events for economic and cultural development. The NSC stressed that staging the Games would bring significant benefits across sports, diplomacy, the economy, culture, and social sectors.
Nigeria is now preparing its final bid submission ahead of the August 31 deadline. Officials noted that the document would be sent after receiving presidential approval, with the CGF expected to announce its host selection before year-end.
