Nigeria Earns International Fencing Federation Praise, Tipped to Host Global Events
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has signalled its readiness to award Nigeria the hosting rights for future global competitions, following what it hailed as the successful staging of the 23rd African Fencing Championships at Charterhouse Lagos.
The tournament, which ran from June 25 to 29, welcomed approximately 180 fencers representing 18 African nations. Egypt once again proved its dominance in the sport, topping the medal standings with a remarkable haul of 11 gold, five silver, and five bronze medals. Kenya secured second place with a solitary gold, while Tunisia finished third with two silver and two bronze medals.
FIE Impressed by Nigeria’s Organisation and Potential
FIE Secretary General Gulnora Saidova, who was on her maiden official trip to Africa, commended Nigeria’s hosting efforts, describing the facilities and organisational standards as highly impressive. Saidova was part of an FIE delegation that met with the Lagos State Governor during the championship.
“This was my first visit to Nigeria, and I was thoroughly impressed by the professionalism and high standards maintained throughout the tournament,” Saidova said. “It has given us the confidence that Nigeria is fully capable of hosting larger international fencing events.”
She also acknowledged the hospitality and enthusiasm demonstrated by the Lagos State Government, calling it a positive indicator of long-term institutional backing for the sport.
“The quality of the venue and the overall atmosphere have shown us that Nigeria is well-positioned to be a future host of major fencing competitions. However, consistent support from government bodies is essential. Without that, the growth of fencing cannot be sustained,” she added.
Saidova further urged the Lagos State Government to formally recognise fencing as a priority sport, citing its status as an Olympic discipline and its potential to enhance Nigeria’s representation at future Olympic Games.
Nigeria’s Performance and Home Crowd Highlight
Nigeria fielded 12 athletes at the championship, with the women’s epee team delivering the standout performance for the hosts. Their 45-40 victory over Benin Republic in a classification match earned them a top-five finish and drew applause from the supportive home crowd.
