‘Massive Future’: Rooney Tips Arsenal’s 15-Year-Old Starlet Dowman for Success
Wayne Rooney has backed Arsenal’s teenage prospect Max Dowman to enjoy a “massive future” after his eye-catching Premier League debut at the weekend, Sport360NG reports.
Dowman, just 15 years and 234 days old, was introduced as a substitute in Arsenal’s 5-0 demolition of Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The attacking midfielder impressed in his 26-minute cameo, winning a late penalty that Viktor Gyokeres converted to complete the rout.
Rooney, who himself broke into the top flight as a 16-year-old with Everton in 2002 and briefly became the youngest Premier League goalscorer with his memorable strike against Arsenal, expressed admiration for the youngster’s achievement on The Wayne Rooney Show podcast.
“To play Premier League football at that age is incredible,” said the former Manchester United and England captain. “I thought I was young when I made my debut, but Max is about 150 days younger than I was. For him and his family, it must feel like a dream. From what I’ve seen, his future looks very, very bright.”
The 39-year-old added that Dowman’s name is already being spoken of highly across football circles. “Everyone you talk to in the game mentions Max Dowman,” Rooney noted.
Dowman is Arsenal’s second 15-year-old debutant in recent years, following Ethan Nwaneri, who became the Premier League’s youngest player when he featured against Brentford in September 2022 at 15 years and 181 days.
Reflecting on the challenges of breaking into senior football at such a tender age, Rooney said: “It’s surreal. One moment you’re in the academy, the next you’re sitting in the dressing room with players you’ve grown up watching. It can be overwhelming, but from what I’ve seen, Max looks level-headed. Hopefully, he adapts quickly and embraces what’s ahead of him.”
