Arsenal’s top 10 premier league starlets who made their debuts before turning 18
Arsenal’s academy has long been recognised as one of English football’s finest, consistently producing young players who go on to shine at the top level. From legends of the past to today’s rising stars, the Gunners have provided the stage for teenagers to announce themselves on football’s biggest domestic platform, Sport360NG reports.
The latest example came in August 2025, when Max Dowman stepped onto the pitch against Leeds United to become the second youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League. Though not Arsenal’s youngest debutant, his introduction was a reminder of the club’s tradition of trusting youth.
Here’s a countdown of the 10 youngest players to feature for Arsenal in the Premier League, all of whom made their first appearance before celebrating their 18th birthday.
10. Aaron Ramsey
Signed from Cardiff City as part of the club’s “British core,” Ramsey had already made a name for himself in Wales before Arsène Wenger brought him to London. After a Champions League appearance against FC Twente, he played his first league minutes against Blackburn in 2008 and earned a starting berth at Portsmouth later that season. Ramsey went on to make over 350 appearances across 11 years, overcoming a horrific leg break to cement his place in Arsenal’s midfield before leaving for Juventus in 2019.

9. Theo Walcott
Walcott arrived from Southampton in January 2006, but Wenger delayed his debut until August, when he replaced Freddie Ljungberg in a clash with Aston Villa. By then, England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson had already fast-tracked him into the national squad for the World Cup. Walcott would go on to feature nearly 400 times for Arsenal, becoming one of the longest-serving players of the Emirates era.

8. Bukayo Saka
Saka made his league debut on New Year’s Day 2019, having first been blooded in the Europa League. Just 17 at the time, the winger quickly established himself as one of Arsenal’s most influential players, and today he is regarded among the Premier League’s elite attackers.

7. Gavin McGowan
A less familiar name, McGowan was thrown into the first team during the inaugural Premier League season in 1993. The defender featured twice as a 17-year-old, including in a North London Derby against Spurs. However, his Arsenal career never took off, and after just seven league appearances, he moved to Luton Town. Following retirement in 2006, he transitioned into teaching.

6. Ainsley Maitland-Niles
Introduced off the bench in a 4-1 win over Newcastle in December 2014, Maitland-Niles was tipped for a bright future. Versatile and energetic, he gained Champions League experience the same week against Galatasaray. However, a lack of opportunities in his preferred midfield role led to several loan spells, including at West Brom and Roma. After leaving Arsenal in 2023, he joined Lyon, though his England caps now feel a distant memory.

5. Cesc Fàbregas
Signed from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Fàbregas was handed his Premier League debut in August 2004 as Arsenal began their title defence at Everton. Just 17 at the time, he grew into one of the club’s finest midfielders of the modern era, making 212 league appearances before returning to Spain in 2011.

4. Serge Gnabry
The German winger made his Premier League debut in 2012 and looked destined for greatness when he netted his first Arsenal goal the following season. However, a damaging loan spell at West Brom derailed his progress, and he departed permanently for Germany in 2016. Gnabry would later prove his quality at Bayern Munich, becoming one of Europe’s top wingers, a move that remains one of Arsenal’s big regrets.

3. Jack Wilshere
A product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, Wilshere became the club’s youngest-ever league debutant in 2008 when he replaced Robin van Persie against Blackburn at just 16 years and 256 days. He amassed 197 appearances in a career blighted by injuries. Despite falling short of expectations due to fitness struggles, he remains one of the most gifted players of his generation.

2. Max Dowman
The teenager made headlines in August 2025 when, at just 15, he came off the bench against Leeds United. Within minutes, he was terrorising defenders and eventually won a stoppage-time penalty. Arteta was full of praise afterward, describing Dowman’s fearlessness as something he had “never seen before.” Many now view him as Arsenal’s next breakout star.

1. Ethan Nwaneri
In September 2022, Nwaneri became the youngest player in Premier League history at 15 years and 181 days when he appeared against Brentford. Three years on, he has grown into a first-team regular under Arteta, fulfilling the promise that made him such a historic debutant.

Arsenal’s list of teenage trailblazers reflects both their academy’s strength and the club’s enduring belief in giving young players a chance. From Wilshere to Saka, and now Dowman and Nwaneri, the Gunners continue to shape the future of English football.
