Ebonyi Governor Rewards Abakaliki FC Players 1M each

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has rewarded players and officials of Abakaliki Football Club with cash gifts following their impressive run to the final of the 2025 President Federation Cup.

Each of the club’s 34 registered players received a N1 million reward from the governor after the team finished as runners-up in the national competition, which concluded on June 28 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. Abakaliki FC narrowly lost the final to Kwara United on penalties, after regulation time ended goalless.

Founded just eight months ago, the Ebonyi-based side stunned many by eliminating top teams such as Enyimba FC of Aba and Nasarawa United of Lafia, earning a reputation as the competition’s surprise package.

While hosting the team at Government House in Abakaliki, Governor Nwifuru also announced a N1 million reward for head coach and former Nigerian international, Ifeanyi Onyedika.

In addition, 16 team officials were each awarded N500,000, while the club’s supporters’ group received N4 million. The Ebonyi chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) was also acknowledged with a N1 million token for its consistent coverage of the team’s journey.

Commending the players, Governor Nwifuru expressed pride in their performance, stating, “I watched the match live, and your display proved that our investment in this team has been worthwhile. Your passion, technical ability, and the spirit behind your anthem were truly inspiring.”

However, the governor did not hide his disappointment over the team’s recent relegation from the Nigeria National League (NNL) to the Nationwide League One (NLO). He blamed the coaching crew for the drop in form during the league season.

“With the quality of football you played in the Federation Cup final, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have finished in the top four. Imagine the dilemma it would have caused if a relegated team had gone on to qualify for the CAF competition,” he said.

Despite the setback, Governor Nwifuru assured that efforts would be made to secure the team’s continued presence in the NNL, hinting at exploring available opportunities to retain their league status.

He also urged the coaching crew to begin early preparations for the upcoming season and granted the players a one-month break. “I will be more present at your matches next season and take a more active role in the club’s progress,” he added.

Team captain Cyril Timothy, who also has a musical background, expressed gratitude on behalf of the players, thanking the governor for his unwavering support since the club’s inception.

“Our plan was to bring the Federation Cup trophy home to appreciate Your Excellency. Although we fell short, we are committed to coming back stronger and achieving greater success next season,” Timothy said.
