Crocker beats Donovan to claim IBF welterweight crown

Lewis Crocker became the new IBF welterweight champion after outlasting Paddy Donovan in a tense split decision at Windsor Park, Belfast, Sport360NG reports.

The home favourite scored crucial knockdowns in rounds three and five, which ultimately swung the bout in his favour. Judges returned cards of 114-112 and 114-113 to Crocker, while one sided with Donovan at 115-111.

For Crocker, it was redemption. Their first meeting in March ended with the Belfast man winning by disqualification despite struggling for much of the fight. This time, he delivered a far sharper display, showing improved speed, timing and composure as he extended his unbeaten record to 22-0. Donovan, meanwhile, slipped to 14-2.

“Nobody gave me a chance in this fight,” an emotional Crocker roared after being crowned champion. “To everyone who doubted me, write it clearly: Lewis Crocker is world champion.”

Knockdowns prove decisive

Donovan, backed by a sizeable travelling support from Limerick, looked confident early but Crocker refused to be rattled. After a cagey opening, the fight turned in round three when the Belfast man caught Donovan coming in, forcing referee Howard Foster to administer a count.

Although Donovan rallied, he was floored again in the fifth by a sharp left hand just as he seemed to be controlling the round. From there, Crocker boxed with economy, landing the cleaner counters while Donovan pressed behind his jab.

The middle rounds were closely contested, Donovan working behind combinations while Crocker timed his attacks with selective power shots. Both had their moments down the stretch, but the two knockdowns ultimately separated them on the cards after 12 enthralling rounds.

The victory was witnessed by Carl Frampton at ringside, seven years after Crocker appeared on the undercard of Frampton’s Windsor Park triumph over Luke Jackson. This time, the Belfast crowd hailed Crocker as their new world champion.

What next?

While Donovan may feel hard done by, having been competitive throughout, Crocker’s patience and discipline proved the difference. At just 26, Donovan still has time to rebuild and push for another title shot.

For Crocker, bigger opportunities now beckon. Conor Benn has already been mentioned as a possible opponent, while names such as Teofimo Lopez, Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia could also enter the frame with the IBF belt now in Belfast.

“This has been eight years of hard work,” Crocker said. “I just needed the chance, and with Belfast behind me, I grabbed it. I’m world champion now.”
