Marine AFC mourns legendary long-serving manager Roly Howard who dies aged 90
Marine AFC are paying tribute to their former long-serving manager Roly Howard, whose remarkable 33-year spell at the Merseyside club once earned him a place in the Guinness World Records as the longest-serving football manager, Sport360NG reports.
Howard led the Crosby-based side for an extraordinary 1,975 matches between August 1972 and April 2005, combining his managerial duties with work as the club’s groundsman. He died aged 90, prompting Marine, now competing in the National League system, to hold a minute’s silence before their game on Saturday.
Marine chairman Paul Leary told BBC Radio Merseyside that Howard’s impact on the club could not be overstated. “He was a hero because for 33 years of his life, he gave 100% of everything to Marine and he was successful,” Leary said.
During his tenure, Howard guided the club to five league titles and 15 cup trophies. He also played a key role in developing young talent, including future Liverpool and Republic of Ireland international Jason McAteer, who progressed through Marine’s youth ranks.
Away from football, Howard worked as a window cleaner, counting former Liverpool manager Sir Kenny Dalglish among his clients.
Reflecting on his career before his final match in 2005, the then-70-year-old acknowledged the length of his service with characteristic modesty. “When you are doing it, it doesn’t feel like that length of time,” he said. “But like life itself, when you reflect on it you wonder where the time has gone.”
Howard once explained that he took on the job of groundsman after seeing then-Stockport County manager Eric Webster mowing the pitch. “I asked him what he was doing and he said, ‘They never sack the groundsman,’” Howard recalled. “So I looked after the ground for five or six years as well.”
As he stepped down from his role in 2005, he said the camaraderie of the dressing room would be the biggest loss. “The involvement and the craic with the players is what I’ll miss most,” he said. “But I always said I would know the time is right, and it is.”
Howard’s passing marks the end of an era for Marine, where his legacy remains deeply woven into the club’s history.
