Ronaldo Named Football’s First Billionaire by Bloomberg

Cristiano Ronaldo has officially entered the billionaire ranks, becoming the first footballer to achieve the milestone, according to data released by financial intelligence firm Bloomberg, Sport360NG reports.

Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, which tracks the world’s wealthiest individuals, has for the first time assessed the net worth of the 40-year-old Portugal and Al-Nassr forward, estimating his fortune at $1.4 billion (£1.04 billion).

The valuation factors in Ronaldo’s career earnings, lucrative endorsement deals, and diverse investments. Between 2002 and 2023, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner reportedly earned over $550 million (£410 million) in salaries alone. His off-field income has been equally impressive, highlighted by a long-term partnership with Nike valued at nearly $18 million (£13.4 million) annually for a decade.

Ronaldo’s 2022 move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr saw him become the highest-paid footballer in history, with an annual salary of around £177 million. Although his initial contract was set to expire in June 2025, he has since signed a new two-year extension reportedly worth more than $400 million (£298 million), keeping him at the club beyond his 42nd birthday.

His long-time rival Lionel Messi, now with Inter Miami, has also amassed enormous wealth, earning more than $600 million (£447 million) in pre-tax salaries during his career, according to Bloomberg. The Argentine captain currently earns around $20 million (£15 million) per year in guaranteed pay roughly a tenth of Ronaldo’s income over the same period and is expected to acquire a stake in Inter Miami after retirement.
