Taiwo Awoniyi poised for january exit amid limited role at Nottingham Forest
Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi could be on the move this January as reports suggest he is close to leaving Nottingham Forest, Sport360NG reports.
The Nigerian forward’s role at the City Ground has dwindled in recent months, fueling speculation about an imminent transfer. Since returning from injury in October, Awoniyi has struggled to regain a regular place in Sean Dyche’s starting lineup.
Limited playing time, combined with Forest’s summer acquisition of Igor Jesus, has raised uncertainty over the 28-year-old’s future. According to Africafoot, Awoniyi is now open to leaving Nottingham Forest after falling down the pecking order. This season, he has appeared in only four Premier League matches, amassing just 133 minutes since his return against Chelsea.
Prior to his injury, Forest reportedly considered offering Awoniyi a contract extension. However, the club’s board is believed to have shelved those plans due to his reduced form and limited impact.
The striker is understood to be prioritizing regular first-team football and is exploring options that would allow him a fresh start. Nottingham Forest, meanwhile, are actively seeking a new forward to partner Igor Jesus, who has emerged as the club’s preferred attacking option this season.
Sources indicate that Werder Bremen have shown serious interest in Awoniyi, having monitored him since last summer and already making enquiries about his availability ahead of the winter transfer window. Reports also suggest that two Premier League clubs and several EFL Championship sides have expressed interest, though the Nigerian international prefers to remain in top-flight football.
Reports show that Awoniyi has settled his family in England, which has become a second home alongside Nigeria. While a lucrative offer from abroad could be tempting, he is said to remain strongly rooted in England for the sake of his wife, children, and brother’s family.
