Norris Predicts Thrilling Six-Car Battle at Silverstone

Lando Norris believes Sunday’s British Grand Prix could deliver a thrilling spectacle, with as many as six drivers vying for victory at Silverstone.

The McLaren driver will start third on the grid, behind teammate Oscar Piastri and pole-sitter Max Verstappen, who made a bold setup gamble with his Red Bull. Mercedes’ George Russell and Ferrari duo Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc line up just behind, setting the stage for a tightly contested race.

Championship leader Piastri, who holds a 15-point advantage over Norris, echoed the Briton’s view, suggesting the race could evolve into a six-way scrap for the win—a sentiment shared by Verstappen and Russell.

Qualifying was an indicator of the close margins expected on Sunday, with just 0.23 seconds separating the top six. Despite errors from both Ferrari drivers in the final moments, the pack remains closely matched—thanks in part to divergent aerodynamic setups.

Verstappen secured pole after Red Bull opted to reduce rear downforce in a bid to cure understeer. The trade-off has given him an edge on Silverstone’s long straights but could compromise cornering speed.

“We’ve taken a different route,” Verstappen said. “We’re fast down the straights but give up a bit in the corners. Ferrari’s the opposite, and McLaren sits somewhere in between. It’ll come down to tyre management—and that’s been a challenge for us this year.”

Norris is optimistic but cautious. “It’s shaping up to be an exciting race. Everyone’s on different downforce levels, so each car has strengths in different sections of the track. Overtaking won’t be easy, especially with Red Bull’s straight-line speed, but the weather could throw in a twist. We’ll see.”

Both Piastri and the Ferraris were unable to fully capitalise on their pace in qualifying. The Australian damaged his car on his first run at Stowe, preventing improvement on his second attempt. Meanwhile, Leclerc and Hamilton both made late errors at the Vale/Club chicane, with a frustrated Leclerc venting angrily over team radio.

McLaren boss Andrea Stella believes Ferrari may still be the team to beat.

“Looking at their pace throughout the weekend, they’ve been strong in every session. The margins are incredibly tight, but Ferrari might still have the edge,” he said.

Stella also weighed in on Verstappen’s aggressive low-downforce setup. With Silverstone’s high-speed nature and long periods at full throttle, Red Bull’s choice could pay dividends.

“The conditions made it easier to run a smaller rear wing,” he explained. “If you’re quick on the straights, you don’t need to push as hard in the corners. So it’s not a given that Max will suffer higher tyre wear.”

Historically, Red Bull has performed well at high-speed tracks like Silverstone, Imola, and Suzuka, but tyre degradation remains their Achilles’ heel. Still, Stella doesn’t expect that to be a major issue this time.

So, what should fans expect when the lights go out? Could this be Hamilton’s long-awaited return to the podium—now in Ferrari red? Or will Verstappen and the McLarens continue to dominate the front?

Stella believes the fight will be wide open.

“I don’t think there’s a huge gap between Max, the McLarens, Ferraris, and even George. The Mercedes pace in Q3 might have been a surprise, but it puts them in the conversation too.”

As Piastri summed up: “It should be fun. I think we’re in for an exciting race.”
