Mead masterclass dents Chelsea’s WSL title push as Arsenal claim Stamford Bridge win

Chelsea’s bid to retain the Women’s Super League crown suffered a major setback as a composed Arsenal display earned a deserved victory at Stamford Bridge, inspired by Beth Mead’s decisive second-half contribution, Sport360NG reports.

After a cagey opening period, the visitors broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the restart when Mead latched on to Alessia Russo’s incisive through ball and drove a precise finish beyond Hannah Hampton. Six minutes later, Mead turned creator, sliding a pass into the path of Mariona Caldentey, who took advantage of generous space to double Arsenal’s lead with a calm finish.

Chelsea pushed for a response but were left to rue missed chances, with Erin Cuthbert and Sjoeke Nusken both failing to capitalise on clear headed opportunities as the hosts slipped to a damaging defeat.

The result leaves Chelsea six points adrift of league leaders Manchester City, having played a game more. Arsenal remain third but have closed to within a point of the Blues in the Women’s Super League standings.

Arsenal had signalled their intent early, forcing Chelsea back in the opening exchanges and almost taking the lead inside two minutes when Katie McCabe’s effort was saved before Russo saw a rebound cleared off the line. Despite dominating possession, the visitors struggled to convert pressure into clear chances before Stina Blackstenius headed narrowly wide just before the interval.

Chelsea’s best moments in the first half came from set-pieces, with Wieke Kaptein and Naomi Girma posing occasional threats, but Arsenal emerged sharper after the break. Controversy surrounded the opener, with Chelsea appealing for a foul on Sam Kerr in the build-up, yet the visitors pressed on and were rewarded for their intensity.

Alyssa Thompson went close to pulling one back soon after, firing narrowly wide, but Caldentey’s second goal effectively settled the contest. Arsenal might have added further gloss, with Blackstenius forcing Hampton into a pair of smart saves late on.

The win was Arsenal’s first league success at Stamford Bridge since December 2023 and hands Manchester City the opportunity to extend their advantage at the top. For Chelsea, once seemingly inevitable champions, the defeat underlined a growing sense of vulnerability, while Arsenal, though likely out of the title race, delivered a timely reminder of their attacking quality ahead of crucial fixtures in domestic and European competition.
