Manchester City cruise past Galatasaray to secure automatic champions league qualification

Manchester City booked their place in the UEFA Champions League last 16 after a comfortable victory over Galatasaray, sneaking into the top eight and avoiding the uncertainty of the play-off round, Sport360NG reports.

Pep Guardiola’s side entered the final matchday under pressure following a surprise defeat to Bodo/Glimt, but they responded with authority at the Etihad Stadium. City’s progression was later confirmed by Benfica’s dramatic win over Real Madrid, ensuring the Premier League champions advanced automatically.

The hosts could have taken the lead inside three minutes when Erling Haaland met Rayan Ait-Nouri’s inviting cross, but the striker headed wide from close range. The miss proved inconsequential, however, as Haaland soon redeemed himself by racing onto Jeremy Doku’s incisive pass and delicately lifting the ball over goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir to open the scoring and end his drought in open play.

City continued to dominate possession and chances, with Nico O’Reilly forcing a sharp save from Cakir with a powerful effort from distance. The pressure told on the half-hour mark when Doku turned provider once again, laying the ball into the path of Rayan Cherki, who rifled a precise finish into the net to double the advantage.

Doku, instrumental in both goals, was forced off shortly before the interval after picking up a knock.

Galatasaray struggled to impose themselves but carved out a pair of opportunities through Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen, whose flicked header and low shot were both denied by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

The two-goal cushion proved enough as City managed the second half with control and composure, securing a result that spared them from two additional European fixtures next month — a scenario that hindered their campaign last season.

Haaland’s goal was only his second in nine appearances across all competitions and his first from open play since December 20, but it maintained his remarkable home record in the Champions League, taking his tally to 36 goals in 28 matches at the Etihad.

City will now await the outcome of the play-offs to discover their opponents in the knockout stage.

For Galatasaray, it was a subdued evening despite a vibrant away support that briefly lit up the stadium with flares before kick-off. Former City players Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane received warm receptions from the home crowd, but neither was able to influence proceedings as the Turkish champions fell short of extending their strong recent record against English opposition.
