Madueke seizes opportunity as Arsenal cruise past Leeds to open seven-point gap
Noni Madueke made the most of an unexpected start as Arsenal returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a convincing victory over Leeds United, extending their lead at the summit to seven points, Sport360NG reports.
The winger was a late inclusion in Mikel Arteta’s starting line-up after Bukayo Saka was forced out during the warm-up with a hip injury. Handed a rare opportunity from the outset, Madueke delivered a decisive performance to help Arsenal end a run of four league matches without a win.
Arsenal gradually took control after a bright opening from the hosts and broke the deadlock when Madueke bent in a precise cross that was met by Martin Zubimendi, who headed the visitors in front. Sustained pressure followed, with Arsenal dominating territory and forcing a series of set-pieces.
The lead was doubled from a corner shortly afterwards as Madueke’s curling delivery caused confusion in the Leeds area, with goalkeeper Karl Darlow only able to punch the ball into his own net.
Arsenal ensured there would be no late drama when Viktor Gyokeres battled his way onto Gabriel Martinelli’s cross to make it 3–0, before substitute Gabriel Jesus added a fourth in the closing stages to complete a comprehensive win.
The result eases pressure on Arsenal after a recent dip in form and places the onus on title rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa, who are not in league action until Sunday.
Madueke provides timely boost
Madueke’s display will be a source of encouragement for Arteta, particularly with Saka facing a spell on the sidelines. The 23-year-old had struggled for rhythm earlier in the campaign, but his assist for the opener was his first in the league this season and underlined his impact.
His corner for Arsenal’s second goal, recorded as an own goal, summed up a positive afternoon, while the goals from Gyokeres and Jesus highlighted a rare scoring contribution from Arsenal’s forward line, which has relied heavily on them since the turn of the year.
Arsenal have now benefited from five own goals this season, more than any other side, and appear to have moved beyond a difficult period as they pursue a first league title in 22 years.
Leeds effort falls short
Leeds, who had been beaten only twice at Elland Road in the league before this match, showed early intent but were unable to sustain their momentum once Arsenal asserted control.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin battled gamely against Arsenal’s centre-backs but received little service, limiting the hosts’ attacking threat. A half-time introduction of Noah Okafor failed to shift the balance, and Leeds were ultimately outclassed.
Despite the defeat, Leeds remain six points clear of the relegation zone, though that cushion could be reduced depending on results elsewhere later on Saturday.
