Manchester City 2-1 Newcastle United: O’Reilly brace cuts gap on leaders Arsenal to two points

Nico O’Reilly struck twice in a pulsating first half as Manchester City edged Newcastle United 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium, moving to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal and intensifying the title race, Sport360NG reports.

Pep Guardiola has consistently downplayed his side’s championship prospects this season, but the latest victory further underlines City’s credentials. The champions are currently the only team in the division on a winning streak longer than one match, a surge in form that has erased a nine-point deficit to the summit.

O’Reilly proved decisive, netting either side of a Lewis Hall effort during a frenetic 13-minute spell before the interval. Hall’s strike, which took a deflection on its way past goal, marked Newcastle’s first league goal at the Etihad since 2018 and briefly restored parity.

However, Eddie Howe’s men were unable to build on that breakthrough. Despite flashes of promise from Anthony Gordon, who arrived buoyed by a prolific European outing, and Joe Willock, the visitors struggled to carve out clear openings after the restart and failed to register a shot on target in the second half. Their expected goals tally remained modest throughout.

City, by contrast, created numerous chances and were repeatedly denied by goalkeeper Nick Pope, who kept the scoreline respectable with a series of fine saves. On another afternoon, the margin of victory might have been far greater.

With momentum firmly on their side and the gap at the top narrowing, City’s pursuit of another league crown is gathering pace heading into the decisive months of the campaign.
