Summerville strike earns West Ham crucial victory over Fulham

Crysencio Summerville’s second-half goal secured a vital win for West Ham United as they defeated Fulham 1–0 at Craven Cottage, boosting their hopes of avoiding relegation in the Premier League, Sport360NG reports.

The Dutch winger capitalised on a defensive mix-up between goalkeeper Bernd Leno and defender Calvin Bassey shortly after the hour mark, calmly finishing to hand the Hammers only their seventh league victory of the season.

The result proved crucial in the battle for survival. Following Nottingham Forest’s 2–2 draw with Manchester City earlier in the evening, the win moves Nuno Espirito Santo’s side level on points with the Midlands club, who occupy 17th place just above the relegation zone.

For Fulham, however, the defeat dents their ambitions of securing European football next season. The loss sees Marco Silva’s men drop to 10th in the standings after failing to take advantage of dropped points by Liverpool and Bournemouth the previous day.

Chances were limited during a largely cagey first half, with both teams struggling to impose themselves. Valentin Castellanos and Samuel Chukwueze exchanged early efforts inside the opening five minutes, while West Ham saw a penalty appeal dismissed when Jarrod Bowen’s corner struck Alex Iwobi on the shoulder.

The contest came alive in the closing stages of the first half when West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes narrowly avoided a second yellow card after bringing down Joshua King. Moments later, King nearly broke the deadlock but saw his effort saved by Mads Hermansen after slipping past Tomas Soucek inside the penalty area.

Fulham thought they had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second half when Tom Cairney went down under a challenge from Castellanos and a penalty was initially awarded. However, referee Matt Donohue reversed the decision after reviewing the incident on the pitch-side monitor, ruling that Cairney had initiated the contact.

West Ham eventually found the decisive moment in the 65th minute. A lapse in communication between Leno and Bassey allowed Summerville to pounce, with the winger making no mistake as he slotted home his fifth league goal of the campaign.

Fulham pushed for an equaliser late on, but Hermansen produced a superb save in the 86th minute to deny Timothy Castagne and preserve a hard-earned victory for the visitors.
