Mexico begin home World Cup in style with convincing win over nine-man South Africa

Early Quinones strike sets hosts on their way, Mexico launched their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with an impressive 2-0 victory over South Africa in the tournament’s opening match at a packed Estadio Azteca, delighting home supporters with a commanding performance, Sport360NG reports.

The co-hosts wasted little time in asserting themselves, taking the lead after just nine minutes. South Africa midfielder Yaya Sithole was dispossessed by Erik Lira, allowing Julian Quinones to pounce on the loose ball before firing a powerful effort through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Mexico continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the opening period. Quinones came close to doubling the advantage moments before the interval, but his first-time effort from inside the box struck the base of the post.

South Africa’s Discipline Problems Prove Costly

South Africa’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback shortly after the restart when Sithole received a straight red card. The midfielder was adjudged to have denied Brian Gutierrez a clear goalscoring opportunity after bringing him down while through on goal.

Already trailing and now reduced to 10 men, Bafana Bafana found themselves under sustained pressure from the hosts.

Their night deteriorated further late in the contest when substitute Themba Zwane was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident involving Roberto Alvarado, leaving South Africa with just nine players on the pitch.

Mexico were also reduced to 10 men in the closing stages after Cesar Montes was shown a red card for fouling Khuliso Mudau, but by then the result was no longer in doubt.

Emotional Jimenez Marks World Cup Milestone

Veteran striker Raul Jimenez sealed the victory midway through the second half, rising highest to meet Alvarado’s cross and powering a header beyond Williams.

The goal carried special significance for the 35-year-old, who was visibly emotional after netting his first-ever World Cup goal. Jimenez, who suffered a life-threatening skull fracture while playing for Wolves against Arsenal in 2020, appeared overwhelmed as teammates joined him in celebration.

The experienced forward had earlier been denied by an excellent one-handed save from Williams, but he eventually found the breakthrough he had been seeking on football’s biggest stage.

Teenager Mora Makes History as Azteca Hosts Another Memorable Opener

The match also provided a landmark moment for Mexico midfielder Gilberto Mora. At just 17 years old, the youngster became the second-youngest player ever to feature in a World Cup finals tournament, behind only Brazilian legend Pele, who achieved the feat during the 1958 World Cup.

Mexico’s latest World Cup hosting adventure could hardly have begun in better fashion. Having previously staged the tournament in 1970 and 1986, the nation once again saw the iconic Azteca Stadium host the opening fixture.

Before kick-off, supporters enjoyed a vibrant opening ceremony featuring performances from several international artists, including Colombian superstar Shakira.

The festive atmosphere continued long after the celebrations ended, as Mexico justified their status as one of the tournament’s stronger sides. Ranked 14th in the world, they comfortably controlled proceedings against a South African team sitting 46 places below them in the FIFA rankings.

With three points secured and an encouraging performance delivered, Mexico have laid down an early marker as they look to make the most of home advantage at the 2026 World Cup.
