Head coach of the DR Congo national football team, Sébastien Desabre, has expressed strong confidence in his squad as they prepare for a decisive FIFA World Cup qualifying encounter, Sport360NG reports.

Desabre, who has overseen the Leopards for more than three years, said the team’s progress to this stage is the result of sustained effort and collective determination throughout the qualification campaign.

Speaking in an interview published on FIFA’s official website on Monday, the French tactician reflected on the lengthy path his side has taken.

“This will be our 13th match since the beginning of the qualifying campaign. It has been a long journey to reach this point, and we have had to overcome several stages along the way,” Desabre said.

The 48-year-old coach noted that the team’s resilience has been shaped by both difficult moments and key achievements during the campaign.

“It’s not about a single defining moment. It’s everything we’ve experienced together, the good and the bad. Those moments have strengthened us and helped build the character of the group. Considering the work the players and staff have put in over the past three years, they truly deserve to be here,” he added.

Desabre also highlighted the balance within his squad, praising both their defensive organisation and attacking efficiency.

“Our defensive structure forms the foundation of the team, but our attacking output has also been encouraging in recent games. We are fortunate to have players competing at top clubs, and most importantly, everyone has fully embraced the vision we are building,” he said.

Looking ahead to the upcoming challenge, the former Uganda and Mali coach insisted that his side will approach the contest with confidence and thorough preparation.

“We are not intimidated by any opponent. Our aim is to deliver our best performance. At the very least, we must reproduce the level we showed against Nigeria,” Desabre said, referencing DR Congo’s 4-3 penalty shootout victory after a 1-1 draw following extra time.

He added that the technical crew has been closely monitoring potential opponents.

“We know about Jamaica and New Caledonia. We’ve been analysing them and will have another opportunity to watch them play in Mexico on March 26. For now, our main focus remains on preparing our own players.”

Despite the magnitude of the fixture, Desabre urged his squad to remain composed.

“Of course, everyone dreams of playing at the World Cup, but we must not allow the occasion to overwhelm us. The key is to stay focused, perform well, and give everything on the pitch. If we do that, we can achieve our objective and make the nation proud.”

The coach also acknowledged the passionate support of Congolese fans, expressing hope that the team can provide a moment of joy for supporters across the country.

“Football means a lot to the Congolese people, and many are facing difficult times. I know the country will pause on March 31 to watch the match, and we hope to give them something to celebrate,” he said.
