Balogun brace powers USA to dominant victory over Paraguay in World Cup opener

The United States launched their World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating Paraguay 4-1 in Los Angeles as Folarin Balogun delivered a standout performance with two goals to guide the co-hosts to a convincing opening win, Sport360NG reports. 

Playing in front of a passionate home crowd, Mauricio Pochettino‘s side produced an energetic and clinical display to take early control of Group D and signal their intentions for the tournament.

Early Pressure Rewards Hosts

The Americans wasted little time asserting themselves and found the breakthrough just seven minutes into the contest.

A lively move orchestrated by Christian Pulisic saw the captain burst past two defenders before releasing Weston McKennie. The midfielder’s low cross into the area was inadvertently turned into the net by Paraguay midfielder Damian Bobadilla, handing the hosts an early advantage.

The USA continued to dominate possession and territory, with Paraguay struggling to contain their attacking movement. Balogun thought he had doubled the lead midway through the first half, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

The Monaco striker would not have to wait long to get on the scoresheet. Three minutes later, he latched onto a pass from Pulisic and fired home to extend the lead.

Balogun’s influence grew as the match progressed, and he added his second goal before halftime with a composed finish.

Malik Tillman threaded a perfectly weighted pass through the Paraguayan defence, allowing Balogun to surge clear. After evading a challenge from Omar Alderete, the forward curled a superb effort beyond goalkeeper Orlando Gill and into the top corner.

The double saw Balogun become only the second American player to score more than once in a World Cup match, joining Bert Patenaude, who famously netted a hat-trick against Paraguay at the inaugural tournament in 1930.

The victory also equalled the USA’s biggest winning margin at a World Cup, matching the 3-0 successes recorded against both Paraguay and Belgium during that same 1930 campaign.

Paraguay Respond Before Reyna’s Stunning Finale

Despite trailing comfortably, Paraguay emerged from the interval with greater urgency and managed to pull a goal back against the run of play.

Julio Enciso provided the decisive pass, sending Mauricio through on goal, and the Brazilian-born midfielder calmly slotted beyond goalkeeper Matt Freese to reduce the deficit.

However, any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished as the Americans maintained control and continued to create chances.

Chris Richards and Tillman both came close to adding further goals, with goalkeeper Gill producing several important saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

The final word belonged to substitute Giovanni Reyna, who produced a moment of brilliance with the last kick of the match. Receiving the ball outside the area, Reyna curled an exquisite strike into the corner using the outside of his right foot to seal a memorable victory.

USA Rise to the Occasion on Home Soil

The match marked the official arrival of the World Cup on American soil, with more than 70,000 spectators packing the stadium following a colourful opening ceremony featuring global music star Katy Perry.

High-profile figures including David Beckham and Tom Cruise were also in attendance as excitement surrounding the tournament reached fever pitch.

Once the focus shifted to football, the hosts justified the growing anticipation with a composed and mature performance.

Pulisic was instrumental in setting the tempo before being substituted at halftime, while Balogun carried his impressive club form into the international stage to spearhead the attack with authority.

The Americans finished with 16 attempts on goal and could easily have increased their tally on another night.

Having watched football’s popularity grow significantly since the nation last hosted the World Cup in 1994, Pochettino and his players will now hope this impressive opening result serves as the foundation for a deep run in the competition and further fuels the sport’s continued rise across the country.
