Nigeria’s Super Falcons have guaranteed themselves at least $200,000 (approximately ₦305 million) in prize money following their narrow 1-0 win over Botswana at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Casablanca, Morocco.

The victory, sealed by a late goal on Thursday night, made Nigeria the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals with a game to spare. It also ensured the Falcons remain the only side in the tournament with consecutive wins in the group stage.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently unveiled a revamped prize structure to reward performance and boost investment in the women’s game. As part of this initiative, all quarter-finalists are assured of a minimum of $200,000. This is a significant step up from previous editions, highlighting CAF’s commitment to advancing women’s football on the continent.

If the Super Falcons go on to reach the semi-finals and finish third, they will pocket an additional $150,000. A second-place finish would be worth $500,000, while lifting the trophy would see them earn a record $1 million in prize money.

Nigeria—Africa’s most decorated women’s national team with nine continental titles—have their sights set firmly on the top prize, and are now just three wins away from the historic payout.

Beyond Nigeria, CAF’s updated prize pool ensures financial compensation across all positions. Teams finishing third in the group stage will each receive $150,000, while bottom-placed teams are set to collect $125,000, reinforcing the federation’s inclusive approach to football development.

For the Falcons, the guaranteed earnings already mark a major boost, and future success in the tournament could translate into vital funding for domestic women’s football infrastructure, player welfare, and grassroots initiatives.

Nigeria will face Algeria in their final group game on Sunday, looking to maintain their unbeaten run and build momentum ahead of the knockout rounds, where the stakes—both sporting and financial—are even higher.
