Arsenal Near Agreement for Sporting Striker Gyokeres
Arsenal are on the verge of completing a deal to sign Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, with negotiations between the two clubs now in the final stages.
Talks have been ongoing for over a week, and sources suggest a breakthrough is imminent. The Gunners’ latest offer is worth around €70 million (£60 million), including performance-related add-ons.
Gyokeres has already agreed personal terms on a five-year contract with Arsenal, which means the transfer could be wrapped up quickly once the remaining contractual details between the clubs are finalised.
Earlier this month, BBC Sport reported that Arsenal shifted their focus to the 27-year-old after failing to progress in discussions to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta travelled to Lisbon late last week to lead negotiations with Sporting officials.
Meanwhile, Sporting president Frederico Varandas confirmed that Gyokeres is facing internal disciplinary measures after missing the start of pre-season training. The striker has not publicly addressed his absence, prompting Varandas to assert that “no one is above the interests of the club” in an interview with Portuguese news agency Lusa.
Gyokeres enjoyed a prolific campaign last season, netting 54 goals in 52 appearances. Since arriving in Portugal from Coventry City, the former Brighton forward has scored an impressive 97 goals in 102 matches, playing a crucial role in Sporting’s domestic success.
