Stokes Leads England to Victory Over stubborn India

Published

Ben Stokes produced a heroic bowling display to power England to a nerve-shredding 22-run win over India on the final day of the third Rothesay Test at Lord’s, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

With India chasing 193 to win, Stokes spearheaded the attack, claiming three crucial wickets as the visitors were bowled out for 170. But it was far from straightforward. Ravindra Jadeja stood firm with a gutsy unbeaten 61, nearly dragging India across the line in a dramatic finish that tested England’s resolve to the limit.

India slumped to 112-8 before Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah frustrated the hosts with a 35-run ninth-wicket stand that lasted nearly 22 overs. Stokes finally broke the resistance by luring Bumrah into a mistimed pull to mid-on. Even then, the drama continued as Jadeja and last man Mohammed Siraj eked out more runs until Shoaib Bashir, playing through injury, claimed the final wicket with Siraj chopping the ball back onto his stumps.

Stokes and Archer Ignite on Final Day
The final day had begun with India precariously placed at 58-4. England wasted no time in turning the screws. Jofra Archer, back in the Test fold after a long injury layoff, set the tone by cleaning up Rishabh Pant with a near-90mph rocket that smashed into off stump. Stokes then removed KL Rahul with a swinging delivery that was given not out on the field but overturned on review.

Washington Sundar, who had boldly claimed India would win, lasted just four balls before falling to a superb catch off Archer’s own bowling. As England chipped away, Jadeja embarked on a dogged rearguard action, surviving an overturned lbw appeal and sharing vital stands with Nitish Kumar Reddy and later the tail.

Despite visibly tiring, Stokes bowled relentlessly from one end, putting in a spell of 10 overs straight before tea, having already bowled nine in the morning. Archer and Woakes also contributed, but it was Bashir who sealed the win, celebrating wildly as Siraj’s dismissal brought the curtain down on a gripping contest.

India Fall Short Despite Jadeja’s Heroics
Much like their collapse in the first Test at Headingley, India again let a promising position slip. After reaching 254-4 in response to England’s first-innings 387, and later standing at 41-1 in pursuit of 193, they found themselves undone by England’s relentless intensity.

Jasprit Bumrah was exceptional throughout, finishing with match figures of 7 wickets and showing immense courage with the bat. Yet, India lost both matches he played in, a fact that may force a rethink if he’s to feature just once more this series.

Ravindra Jadeja’s lone stand at Lord’s embodied India’s resilience, but their middle order’s inconsistency and Pant’s potential injury leave lingering concerns ahead of the fourth Test. England, meanwhile, will have to contend with the loss of Bashir due to a finger injury, but the return of Archer and the ever-dependable Stokes provide them with belief and balance.
