FIFA Considers Shifting 2026 World Cup Matches from U.S. to Canada Amid Visa Concerns

FIFA is reportedly exploring the possibility of relocating several matches of the 2026 World Cup from the United States to Canada due to mounting concerns over U.S. immigration policies.

The global football body is facing increased pressure following a tightening of visa regulations that has sparked criticism from fans, media outlets, and human rights groups. The restrictions have created major obstacles for supporters, journalists, and team delegations hoping to enter the U.S. during the tournament.

Currently, citizens from as many as 43 countries are barred from traveling to the U.S., raising the prospect that some national teams including qualified nations like Iran may be forced to play in stadiums with limited or no fan presence.

The situation has prompted questions over FIFA’s adherence to its own principles, which promote inclusivity, non-discrimination, and human rights. Critics argue that holding matches in a country with such restrictive entry policies contradicts these core values.

While the U.S. offers significant financial muscle and infrastructure, Canada is being viewed as a more viable alternative. Known for its stable immigration policies and neutral political stance, Canada also offers strong logistical capabilities to host high-profile matches.

FIFA now faces a critical decision: protect the commercial success of the tournament or uphold its stated commitment to accessibility and inclusion. A final verdict on whether games will be moved north of the border is expected in the coming months.
