Kevin De Bruyne Joins Napoli After Manchester City Exit

Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has signed with Napoli following his departure from Manchester City at the conclusion of the Premier League season.

The 33-year-old will be working under Antonio Conte, the former Chelsea and Tottenham boss who now manages the reigning Serie A champions. De Bruyne opted for a free transfer to Italy, turning down interest from MLS side Chicago Fire. The move ensures he remains in Europe’s elite competition, with Napoli set to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Napoli unveiled their high-profile signing with a digitally rendered image of De Bruyne seated on a throne wearing a crown, captioned simply: “King Kev is here.”

De Bruyne leaves Manchester City after a decade of remarkable success. Since joining from Bundesliga club Wolfsburg in 2015, he has collected 19 major honours, including six Premier League titles, five League Cups, two FA Cups, and the club’s first-ever Champions League title in 2023 — part of a historic Treble under Pep Guardiola.

City confirmed De Bruyne’s exit prior to the season’s end, and he received a heartfelt send-off from fans during his final home appearance at the Etihad Stadium in May. He also made a brief cameo in City’s last away game against Fulham.

Reflecting on his time at the club, De Bruyne said:
“These 10 years have been nothing short of incredible. I’ve poured everything into helping the team succeed, and I’m immensely proud of what we accomplished. Manchester will always be home for me and my family.”

In response to his departure, Manchester City have moved swiftly to reinforce their midfield, bringing in Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan and Rayan Cherki from Lyon.

Should the Champions League draw align, De Bruyne could face his former club next season as he continues his career at the highest level. At Napoli, he joins a squad that features fellow former Premier League midfielders Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour, who played key roles in the team’s dramatic Serie A title win last season.
