England Crash Out of World Cup of Darts After Shock Loss to Hosts Germany
Top-ranked duo Luke Humphries and Luke Littler suffered a stunning exit from the World Cup of Darts, falling 8-4 to hosts Germany in the last 16 on a dramatic night in Frankfurt.
The German team, made up of Martin Schindler and tournament newcomer Ricardo Pietreczko, capitalized on a host of missed opportunities from the English pair, who struggled to find their rhythm in front of a partisan crowd.
Sky Sports pundit Wayne Mardle, a former four-time world championship semi-finalist, said the pressure of expectation clearly impacted the pre-tournament favourites.
“There’s no doubt Luke and Luke were burdened by the weight of being heavy favourites,” he commented. “The pressure told – they faltered, while their opponents rose to the occasion. Credit to Martin and Ricardo for keeping their composure.”
Humphries and Littler, both newly appointed MBEs in the King’s Birthday Honours, had high hopes of guiding England to a record-extending sixth title. Humphries lifted the trophy last year alongside Michael Smith, but this was the first time he and Littler had teamed up.
However, their campaign got off to a rocky start. Greeted by boos during their walk-on, the English duo looked uneasy from the outset as Germany snatched the opening leg. Though England fought back to level at 2-2, Schindler and Pietreczko surged ahead with five straight legs, effectively seizing control.
Despite a brief English revival, the hosts sealed the upset in the 12th leg with a composed 62 checkout from Pietreczko — also known by his nickname, Pikachu.
Schindler praised their teamwork, highlighting his partner’s performance: “We stayed confident and Ricardo’s finishing on double 16 was crucial. German darts is on the rise, and we’re proud to move into the next round.”
Former finalist Bobby George pointed to the difficulties of doubles play as a factor in England’s downfall.
“Playing in pairs is a different challenge — the gaps between turns disrupt rhythm,” he noted.
Three-time BDO champion Glen Durrant said the atmosphere played a significant role: “The noise during England’s entrance was deafening. It was an intimidating environment. This will be a learning moment for them.”
Germany will now face 2022 champions Australia in the quarter-finals. Simon Whitlock and Damon Heta advanced comfortably with an 8-1 win over Argentina.
Whitlock said he wasn’t surprised by England’s defeat, while Heta suggested the English pair may have over-relied on each other:
“They probably assumed the other would step up when needed. But with the crowd and pressure, it couldn’t have been easy. It’ll be a valuable experience for them.”
Elsewhere, the Netherlands delivered a flawless 8-0 victory over Scotland, while Wales defeated the Philippines 8-2. Northern Ireland beat South Africa by the same margin and will face the Republic of Ireland in the last eight.
