Pope Keeps Place as England Unveil Line-Up for First India Test

England have opted for continuity in their top order for the opening Test against India at Headingley, sticking with Ollie Pope at number three. The decision means 21-year-old Jacob Bethell misses out on a place in the starting XI.
Pope, who also serves as vice-captain, was seen as the most likely to make way had Bethell been handed a debut. Despite Bethell’s rising stock—after a string of impressive performances against New Zealand and a recent 82 against West Indies in an ODI—he remains on the sidelines for now.
Bethell had missed England’s previous Test, a convincing win over Zimbabwe, due to his Indian Premier League commitments. At the time, skipper Ben Stokes suggested Bethell’s return to the team was imminent but later clarified his comments had been misinterpreted.
England’s selectors have kept faith in Pope, who scored a commanding 171 against Zimbabwe. However, with a crucial five-match series against India followed by an Ashes tour, Pope will need to improve his record against top opposition. He averages just 22.05 across 18 Tests against India and Australia, compared to a career average of 35.49.
Woakes and Carse Return in Refreshed Bowling Attack
Two changes have been made from the side that faced Zimbabwe, with Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse replacing Sam Cook and the injured Gus Atkinson in the pace attack.
Woakes returns from an ankle injury, while Carse—now fit after a foot problem—is set to play his first home Test. The Durham fast bowler could even take the new ball, despite mostly serving as a change option in domestic cricket.
“If asked to open the bowling, I’m ready,” Carse told BBC Sport. “I did it in the one-day series against West Indies and felt confident.”
Sam Cook and Jamie Overton are the seamers omitted from the final XI, with Atkinson currently recovering from a hamstring injury. The fast bowler could feature later in the series, having taken part in England’s training at Headingley.
Meanwhile, Jofra Archer’s return to red-ball cricket is gathering momentum. The 30-year-old is eyeing a comeback with Sussex in the County Championship against Durham this Sunday. If successful, Archer may be considered for the second Test at Edgbaston or the third at Lord’s.
India Face Transition Period After Veteran Retirements
India are yet to reveal their team, but a reshuffle at the top of the order is expected following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. New captain Shubman Gill will bat at four, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant confirmed to stay at number five.
Reflecting on the opposition, Carse said: “They’ve lost two world-class batters, but India have tremendous depth. Whatever team they put out will offer a strong challenge.”
England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.
