Young Lions Set Up Semi-Final Clash with Netherlands After Dominant Display

England Under-21s kept their European Championship title defence alive with a commanding 3-1 victory over Spain to secure a place in the semi-finals.

James McAtee and Harvey Elliott struck early to give England a dream start in Trnava, before Elliot Anderson sealed the win with a stoppage-time penalty. The result sets up a last-four meeting with the Netherlands on Wednesday in Bratislava.

There was drama at the final whistle as tempers flared, leading to a heated confrontation involving players and coaching staff from both sides. Order was eventually restored, but the fiery finish underlined the intensity of a match that saw England assert their dominance.

England were almost on the back foot early when Charlie Cresswell was penalised for a handball in the box, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review. That reprieve proved vital, as McAtee soon opened the scoring from a corner before Elliott capitalised on a goalkeeping error to double the lead inside the first 15 minutes.

Spain pulled one back before half-time through a Javi Guerra penalty after Jarell Quansah fouled Alberto Moleiro. Despite growing pressure in the second half, England goalkeeper James Beadle produced a crucial double save to deny Guerra an equaliser.

Substitute Jonathan Rowe was brought down by Spanish keeper Alejandro Iturbe in stoppage time, allowing Anderson to restore England’s two-goal cushion and book their place in the semi-finals.

Defending Champions Show Their Mettle

Manager Lee Carsley insisted pre-match that his side were not underdogs despite an uneven group stage and his players delivered. In a rematch of the 2023 final, England showed composure, discipline and resilience, especially in a second half where Spain pushed hard for a leveller.

England’s defensive effort was particularly notable. They made 24 clearances and 44 ball recoveries, along with five crucial blocks that kept Spain at bay.

James McAtee, who opted to miss the Club World Cup with Manchester City to focus on this tournament, shone in the first half. Charlie Cresswell was a rock in defence, and Jay Stansfield’s relentless running created space for others, even if he didn’t get on the scoresheet himself.

Spain’s goalkeeper Iturbe had a night to forget, spilling a shot that led to Elliott’s goal and conceding the late penalty. For Spain, the tournament ends in disappointment, while England continue their march toward back-to-back titles.
