Krejcikova’s Title Defence Ends in Tears as Sinner Cruises Into Wimbledon Last 16

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova saw her Wimbledon run come to a heartbreaking end on Saturday, exiting in the third round after a gruelling three-set defeat to American 10th seed Emma Navarro.

Krejcikova, visibly emotional in the closing stages on Court One, appeared hampered by fitness concerns as Navarro capitalised to deliver another major upset in the women’s draw. The Czech 17th seed had already battled through back-to-back three-setters in her opening matches against Alexandra Eala and Caroline Dolehide, but could not summon another comeback.

Navarro’s victory adds to a growing list of surprises at the All England Club, with five of the top six seeds already eliminated from the tournament.

The loss marks another setback in a difficult season for Krejcikova, who had only played six matches prior to Wimbledon due to injury. After capturing her second major title by defeating Jasmine Paolini in last year’s final, the 28-year-old missed several months with a back issue and made a brief return at Roland Garros, where she lost in the second round. She also withdrew from the Eastbourne Open with a thigh problem.

“It was a tough match today. I don’t think either of us played our best tennis, and I know she’s been dealing with some physical issues,” Navarro said post-match.

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, top seed Jannik Sinner underlined his title credentials with a commanding 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 win over Spain’s Pedro Martinez. The match lasted just under two hours on Centre Court, with Martinez visibly struggling with a shoulder injury.

Sinner, who has conceded only 17 games across his first three matches, will now meet Bulgarian 19th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round. Dimitrov advanced with a straight-sets win over Sebastian Ofner of Austria.

The 23-year-old Italian has enjoyed a strong season, returning to action in May following a brief doping suspension. He fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the Italian Open final and narrowly missed out on the French Open title, failing to convert three championship points against the Spaniard.

Sinner’s best Wimbledon showing came last year with a run to the semi-finals.

“Making it to the second week of a Slam is always something special,” Sinner said.
