Nine-man PSG beat Bayern to reach Club World Cup semis

Paris Saint-Germain booked their place in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup with a dramatic 2-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Saturday, overcoming a late scare that saw them reduced to nine men.

Goals from Desire Doue and Ousmane Dembélé proved decisive in a pulsating quarter-final showdown at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Despite red cards for Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez in the closing stages, the reigning European champions held firm to eliminate the Bundesliga giants.

The highly anticipated encounter, played before a crowd of nearly 67,000, lived up to expectations. Bayern, who had won their previous four meetings with PSG—including a narrow Champions League win last November—matched the French side stride for stride before eventually falling short.

Emotions ran high prior to kick-off as players and fans observed a minute’s silence in memory of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident earlier in the week. The moment was particularly poignant for PSG, who had five Portuguese players in their squad, including starters Vitinha, João Neves, and Nuno Mendes.

Luis Enrique made the tactical decision to start Dembélé on the bench as he eases back from a quadriceps injury, while Bayern’s Jamal Musiala, returning from a calf concern, was included in the starting XI. However, Musiala was later forced off just before half-time after suffering a serious ankle injury.

Dubbed a “perfect storm” by Bayern boss Vincent Kompany due to both teams’ attacking mindsets and intense pressing styles, the clash delivered on all fronts. The match featured dazzling wing play, top-tier goalkeeping, and relentless tempo.

Both sides traded early chances. PSG’s Doue fired just wide, while Donnarumma was alert to deny Michael Olise at the other end. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia twice came close—hitting the side netting and later forcing a superb save from Manuel Neuer—while Donnarumma matched his counterpart with a full-stretch save to stop another Olise strike.

Bayern appeared to have taken the lead in first-half stoppage time when Dayot Upamecano headed in from an Olise free-kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Harry Kane nearly gave the Germans a breakthrough with a powerful header, only to see it sail just wide following a Kingsley Coman cross.

In the end, PSG’s clinical edge proved the difference, as Doue and substitute Dembélé found the net to secure a statement win in what has been the tournament’s most high-profile fixture so far.
