Musiala sustained a severe ankle Injury in Club world cup defeat to PSG
Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup after a dramatic 2-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday — a contest overshadowed by a serious injury to Jamal Musiala.
The young German midfielder suffered a suspected ankle fracture just before half-time following a collision with PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who appeared visibly shaken by the incident. Musiala’s exit added a somber tone to what was an intense, high-stakes encounter between two European heavyweights.
Veteran Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, 39, showcased his enduring class shortly after the break, pulling off a stunning stop to deny Bradley Barcola, who was through on goal and aimed for the far corner.
With the game still goalless and extra time looming, PSG manager Luis Enrique turned to Ousmane Dembele in the 70th minute in search of a breakthrough. The French winger nearly capitalised on a rare Neuer error, chasing down a misplaced pass outside the box and attempting to roll the ball into an empty net, only to see it trickle agonisingly wide.
PSG finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when 20-year-old Désiré Doué punished a costly turnover from Harry Kane. The midfielder created space at the edge of the area and drilled a low strike past Neuer at the near post.
Bayern’s hopes were briefly revived when PSG defender Willian Pacho received a red card for a high challenge on Leon Goretzka with just seven minutes left. The Bundesliga champions thought they had equalised through Kane’s header, but it was ruled out for offside.
The French side were reduced to nine men in stoppage time when substitute Lucas Hernandez was sent off for elbowing an opponent. Despite the numerical disadvantage, PSG nearly doubled their lead on the counter when Dembele struck the crossbar.
Dembele eventually found the net in the dying moments, finishing off a surging run by Achraf Hakimi and celebrating with a video-game gesture in tribute to the late Diogo Jota.
PSG will now face either Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals, scheduled for Wednesday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
