Super Eagles Slip to 44th in Latest FIFA World Rankings
Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped one place in the latest FIFA World Rankings released on Thursday, moving from 43rd to 44th in the world standings.
Despite the slight dip, Nigeria remains one of Africa’s football powerhouses, holding firm as the fifth-highest ranked team on the continent. The Super Eagles trail only Morocco (12th), Senegal (18th), Egypt (34th), and Algeria (36th), but continue to sit above long-time rivals South Africa (56th) and Ghana (76th).
The rankings update follows a period of mixed results for the national team, including a morale-boosting Unity Cup victory in London. The team remains unbeaten under newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle, who has made a strong start to his tenure.
Elsewhere on the continent, Ivory Coast—who briefly overtook Nigeria after winning the Africa Cup of Nations—have now slipped back behind the Super Eagles, dropping four places in the global standings.
Senegal Lead African Charge
Senegal’s steady performances have propelled them into the world’s top 20, reinforcing their position as Africa’s leading side. On the international stage, the top five in the global rankings remain unchanged.
Mexico climbed to 13th following their Gold Cup triumph, leapfrogging the United States, who fell to 15th.
Other Notable Movers:
-
Norway – up five places to 33rd
-
Paraguay – climbed to 43rd
-
North Macedonia – now 62nd after rising five spots
-
Zambia – moved up to 83rd
-
Costa Rica – biggest mover, surging 14 places to 40th
In Asia, nations including Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Laos made noticeable progress, while Caribbean sides Bermuda and Grenada also recorded significant improvements.
Eyes on the Future
While the Super Eagles’ drop in the global standings marks a slight setback, their sustained place among Africa’s top five reaffirms their status as a continental heavyweight. With a promising start under new leadership, Nigeria’s focus now shifts to upcoming qualifiers and tournament campaigns.
