Liverpool Retire No. 20 Shirt in Honour of Late Forward Diogo Jota

Liverpool have announced they will retire the number 20 shirt worn by Diogo Jota as a mark of respect following the tragic death of the Portuguese forward and his brother, André Silva, in a car accident.

The club made the decision in close consultation with Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and his family, ensuring his memory will live on at Anfield. The gesture means no player across the men’s, women’s, or academy teams will wear the number 20 jersey again.

In a statement, the club said the move honours both Jota’s remarkable contribution on the pitch and the deep emotional connection he built with teammates, staff, and supporters during his five years on Merseyside.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and went on to score 65 goals in 182 appearances. He played a key role in the Reds’ recent successes, including FA Cup and League Cup triumphs in 2022, another League Cup win in 2024, and last season’s Premier League title victory.

Michael Edwards, Fenway Sports Group’s chief executive of football, reflected on the decision:
“This is a truly unprecedented step in our club’s history. Retiring Diogo’s shirt number ensures his legacy is preserved forever. We felt it was vital to involve his wife, Rute, and his family before taking this step.”

Jota and his brother died in the early hours of July 3 when their Lamborghini suffered a tyre failure while overtaking, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. The 27-year-old was returning to Liverpool for pre-season, choosing to travel by car and ferry due to medical advice against flying following minor surgery.

The brothers were laid to rest in their hometown of Gondomar last Saturday, with Liverpool sending a large delegation to the funeral.

On Friday, Rute Cardoso, accompanied by her children, visited Anfield alongside members of the Liverpool squad and manager Arne Slot to pay tribute. Just 11 days before the accident, Cardoso and Jota had tied the knot.

She was seen laying flowers outside the stadium, where countless tributes from fans continue to pour in.

Liverpool are set to play their first match since Jota’s passing on Sunday, when they meet Preston North End in a pre-season friendly at Deepdale. The match will include a minute’s silence and several tributes to both Jota and his brother André Silva.
