Arsenal Seal £48.5m Deal for Chelsea’s Noni Madueke

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of England international Noni Madueke from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £48.5 million, potentially rising above £50 million with performance-related add-ons.

The 23-year-old winger has signed a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium and becomes the fourth addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer. Madueke, who had been part of Chelsea’s squad at the Club World Cup in the United States, departed early ahead of last weekend’s final against Paris Saint-Germain to finalise his switch to North London.

“Feeling blessed and grateful to be here. Thanks to everyone who made this happen,” Madueke posted on Instagram. “I’m excited to get started and repay the trust shown in me. This is going to be something special.”

After joining Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for £30 million, Madueke made 92 appearances, scoring 20 goals and playing a key role in the Blues’ successful UEFA Conference League campaign last season. A former youth player at Crystal Palace and Tottenham, he developed further in the Netherlands, where he lifted the KNVB Cup with PSV.

Madueke made his senior England debut in August 2024 and impressed during last month’s World Cup qualifier against Andorra, where he assisted Harry Kane’s match-winning goal.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta spoke highly of his new recruit: “Noni is a dynamic and gifted young player with a proven track record at both club and international level. At 23, he already has considerable experience and brings energy and versatility to our forward line.”

Arteta continued, “His quality has been evident for some time, and having watched him closely, we believe he will add real depth to our squad.”

However, the transfer has not been welcomed by all Arsenal supporters. News of the club’s pursuit of Madueke triggered backlash earlier this month, with over 5,000 fans signing a petition titled #NoToMadueke. In response, murals outside the Emirates Stadium were defaced with messages calling for Arteta’s resignation.

Madueke becomes Arsenal’s second signing from Chelsea this window, following the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Midfielders Christian Norgaard (Brentford) and Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad) have also joined, while the club is nearing deals for Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres and Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera.

Where Will Madueke Fit In?

Primarily a right-sided forward, Madueke faces competition from Bukayo Saka, who has largely made the position his own in recent seasons. Though Saka missed three months last term due to a hamstring injury, he still started 108 of Arsenal’s last 114 Premier League games since 2021.

Madueke offers flexibility, having also featured on the left for both Chelsea and England. He assisted Kane’s winner from that flank during the recent international window and started four of Chelsea’s final five league games on the left, including the Conference League final, potentially putting him in direct competition with Gabriel Martinelli.

Why Arsenal Are Excited

Statistically, Madueke’s output last season places him among the Premier League’s most impactful wingers. His 9.6 expected goals, 80 shots, 199 touches inside the box, and 242 progressive carries all surpassed the numbers recorded by both Saka and Martinelli.

In 32 league appearances for Chelsea, Madueke delivered a combined 10 goals and assists, figures that could prove valuable to an Arsenal side that struggled for attacking depth during their injury-hit campaign.

With his aggressive, direct style of play, Madueke could become a vital weapon against deep-lying defences, a frequent challenge for Arteta’s side.
