Nigeria’s Super Falcons clinched a dramatic 2-1 win over South Africa to secure their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday, following an intense semi-final encounter.

Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria the lead just before halftime, confidently converting a penalty in the 45th minute after sustained pressure from the Falcons. The opener gave Nigeria a slim advantage heading into the break.

South Africa were dealt an early setback in the first half when striker Hildah Magaia was forced off with an injury in the 26th minute, prompting Thubelihle Makhubela to come on as her replacement.

The reigning champions fought back after the interval and found an equaliser on the hour mark, with Linda Motlhalo slotting home from the penalty spot to bring Banyana Banyana level.

Just as the match appeared destined for extra time, Nigeria delivered a late twist. Deep into stoppage time, Michelle Alozie found the net in the 94th minute, finishing off a well-worked move involving Esther Okoronkwo to seal victory for the nine-time champions.

The tense affair saw tactical substitutions and fierce challenges from both sides, but it was the Super Falcons’ composure in the dying minutes that proved decisive.

With this win, Nigeria move one step closer to another continental crown, reinforcing their status as the most successful team in African women’s football.
