Super Falcons Set Up WAFCON Final Showdown with Hosts Morocco

Nigeria will take on tournament hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday, July 26, after both sides secured hard-fought victories in their semi-final encounters on Tuesday.

The Super Falcons edged out reigning champions South Africa 2-1 in a tense clash at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, while Morocco advanced after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Ghana. Their tie ended 1-1 after regulation time, with the hosts prevailing 4-2 from the spot.

Nigeria’s quest for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title was kept alive thanks to a first-half penalty from captain Rasheedat Ajibade and a stoppage-time winner by Michelle Alozie. Despite dominating the early stages of the match, the Falcons had to dig deep to overcome a determined Banyana Banyana side.

The first clear opportunity fell to Nigeria in the 11th minute when Ashleigh Plumptre set up Chinwendu Ihezuo, only for South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini to make a smart save. Just a minute later, Dlamini was called upon again to deny Esther Okoronkwo.

South Africa gradually grew into the game and began to control possession, probing for an opening. However, Nigeria were handed a golden chance shortly before the interval when Bomgeka Gamede was penalised for handball inside the area. Ajibade stepped up and calmly slotted home from the spot, sending Dlamini the wrong way to put Nigeria in front.

The defending champions responded strongly in the second half and levelled in the 60th minute. Nigerian defender Osinachi Ohale fouled Hildah Magaia after a clever pass from Refiloe Jane, resulting in a penalty. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from 12 yards, sending Chiamaka Nnadozie the wrong way to restore parity.

Buoyed by the equaliser, South Africa pushed forward and created several chances, but Nigeria held firm. With extra-time looming, Michelle Alozie produced a moment of magic in stoppage time. Her deep ball into the box sailed over everyone and nestled into the far corner, securing her first goal for the national team and sealing Nigeria’s place in a 10th WAFCON final.

The Super Falcons have never lost a final in the history of the competition, dating back to its inception in 1998. They will aim to maintain that perfect record when they face Morocco on Saturday in Casablanca.
