Oshoala Dismisses Retirement Rumours, Reaffirms Commitment to Super Falcons – “I’m still here”

Super Falcons forward Asisat Oshoala has denied speculation suggesting she has retired from international football, insisting she remains fully committed to representing Nigeria, Sport360NG reports.

Speaking to journalists in Morocco after Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 victory over the host nation in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Oshoala labelled the rumours as unfounded.

“I don’t know where that came from,” the six-time African Player of the Year said. “I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here, still playing, still doing my job, that’s what matters.”

Reflecting on the Falcons’ comeback win, Oshoala used the moment to offer words of encouragement to younger players and supporters, urging them to stay resilient.

“What I would take from today’s game is this, don’t give up. Keep fighting till the end,” she said. “There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, if you believe, only if you believe.”

She added that readiness is key for every player in the team: “I always tell my girls, stay ready. You never know when your moment will come. And when it does, you must be prepared to step up and show what you can do.”

Oshoala, who made her senior debut for Nigeria in 2013 during a friendly against Japan, rose to global prominence a year later at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, where she finished as top scorer and was named the tournament’s best player.
