Luis Díaz Bids Emotional Farewell to Liverpool After £65.5m Bayern Move
Luis Díaz says he leaves Liverpool with a “fulfilled heart” after sealing a £65.5 million switch to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.
The Colombian international has signed a four-year contract with the German champions, ending a successful three-and-a-half-year stint at Anfield. His move comes after Bayern improved upon their initial £58.6m offer, which Liverpool turned down earlier in July.
The 28-year-old winger, who was omitted from Liverpool’s pre-season clash with AC Milan amid mounting speculation, officially completed his medical over the weekend before finalising the transfer.
Díaz departs Merseyside as a Premier League title-winner and with four major trophies under his belt. Reflecting on his departure, he expressed gratitude but also sorrow following the tragic loss of team-mate Diogo Jota earlier this month.
“I came full of dreams, and I leave with pride for what we achieved together,” Díaz wrote in a heartfelt Instagram post. “I’ve met incredible people, team-mates who became family, coaches who guided me, and fans who made Liverpool a truly special place. Leaving with silverware and a sense of duty fulfilled means everything, but this goodbye would have been perfect if we hadn’t lost one of our own.”
He continued: “Diogo will always be with us. I carry him and all of you in my heart. Thank you for everything.”
Díaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for an initial £37m fee. Over 148 appearances, he netted 41 goals and provided a consistent attacking spark. He won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in his first season and played in the 2022 Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.
Last season, he enjoyed his most prolific campaign yet, scoring 17 times in all competitions while helping Liverpool reclaim the Premier League crown.
His departure takes Liverpool’s summer sales to around £115m, aiding in offsetting significant investments totalling approximately £270m. New arrivals include Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.
The Reds are also monitoring Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, who was left out of the Magpies’ pre-season tour of Asia and is reportedly open to a move.
What Díaz Leaves Behind
Since arriving in 2022, Díaz developed into one of Liverpool’s most dynamic players. His dribbling, energy, and attacking output made him indispensable. He led the team in dribbles completed and fouls won during his tenure, while also ranking near the top for goals scored and attacking involvement.
His sharp uptick in productivity last season, including a 19% shot conversion rate, his best in a Liverpool shirt, coincided with a successful stint in a central false-nine role. Notably, he scored a hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in November while playing through the middle, a tactical tweak that paid dividends for then-interim manager Arne Slot.
Díaz also contributed defensively, winning possession in the final third more than any Red apart from one, and punching above his weight in duels despite his modest frame.
Now, Liverpool will turn to other options to fill the void. Cody Gakpo, who notched 18 goals last term, is likely to see increased minutes on the left wing, though he lacks Díaz’s flair in tight spaces. Teenager Rio Ngumoha has impressed in pre-season and could be gradually integrated, while new signing Ekitike offers versatility across the frontline.
And if Liverpool succeed in luring Isak from Newcastle, a reshaped and fluid front three could emerge.
