Nigerian Handball Mourns Legendary Coach Patrick Atusu

The Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) has confirmed the passing of former national team coach Patrick Atusu, marking the end of an era for one of the sport’s most influential figures in the country, Sport360NG reports.

Atusu, who died earlier this week, was best known for leading Nigeria’s senior women’s handball team to the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, a historic feat that remains the nation’s only appearance in handball at the Olympic Games.

Beyond his national exploits, Atusu served as Director of Sports Development in Sokoto State and played a key role in nurturing talent at Rima Strikers, a prominent handball club in the region. His commitment to grassroots development helped shape the careers of several successful players.

Reacting to his death, HFN President Samuel Ocheho described Atusu as a monumental figure in Nigerian sports.
“Coach Patrick Anthony Atusu’s passing is a profound loss not only to handball but to the broader Nigerian sports community. He was a cornerstone of progress in our game. On behalf of the Federation, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and to everyone who was touched by his work. His impact is lasting, and his legacy endures,” Ocheho said.

Atusu’s coaching career spanned more than two decades, during which he led both the male and female national handball teams. His influence was evident as numerous former players gathered at the Sokoto Central Cemetery on Friday to bid farewell to a man they revered as a mentor and trailblazer in the sport.
